The art of Happiness

Smile Laugh

Depression is a major health issue, currently affecting 100 mil people worldwide. It has reached almost epidemic proportions. It is a complex issue, and in Ayurveda it is seen as a sign of low ojas, stagnation of Prana and a weak immune function.

Depression is the most common Kapha psychological disorder. Kaphas can suffer from low energy, slow metabolism , obesity, and are prone physcologically to conservative attitudes and attachment. All this leads to a feeling of immense heaviness in both mind and body.

Yet Vata and Pitta have their types of depression as well.

Pitta depression often follows some failure in life. Pittas often have high goals and expectations of themselves that can be difficult to reach. Often their depression is mixed with anger and frustration. Read more »

Ayurveda September 2011 Newsletter

AgniIn this newsletter I am focusing on digestion as I so believe in the importance of diet, and healthy habits that support this, as the key to treating most illnesses and imbalances.

An important point is that in Ayurveda we believe “it is not what you eat, but what your body absorbs” … So often I see people that are eating well, but they just don’t seem to be able to absorb their food as well as they could.

This is also relevant, as this topic is what the upcoming Ayurveda retreat will focus on.

It has been said, "You are what you eat." But really, "You are what you digest" is closer to the truth. .In Ayurveda we see this as the strength of your agni.

Insufficient enzyme production is at the root of much "tummy trouble" in our country. Chronic malabsorption can lead to a variety of illnesses. Read more »

Ayurveda August 2011 Newsletter

This Issue:

  • Healthy Hair
  • Recipe – Sesame 0range broccoli
  • Ayurveda and Yoga Retreat (updated schedule)
  • Yoga Nidra 3.30 this Sunday 7th at Yoga Sanctuary
  • Blog. “What we think we then become…”

Following on from the last newsletter August’s issue focuses on hair health. In taking care of the hair, we have to recognise that the hair is part of the bloodstream that in turn is feed by the digestive system. Every hair has a hair bed in the skin, with a bulb at the end of the hair root, through which the hair draws it’s nutrition from the blood.

In Ayurveda, hair (along with nails) is considered a by product of bone formation. Thus proper nutrition of bones is necessary for healthy growth of hair. Brittle, dry hair that breaks easily and falls out is an indication that you are not completely absorbing the minerals necessary for both bone and hence hair health. So the health of your hair is an indicator of the health of your bones and vice versa.
